The AsianArt Ensemble was initiated in 2007, and formed in its present structure in 2009. In 2012 it won the prize of the German record critics (“Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik”) for its first CD “asian art ensemble”, published by Celestial Harmonies. With its unique combination of instruments and the music it performs, the AsianArt Ensemble has established an important role in the music world. With instruments from China, Japan and Korea combined with Western strings, AsianArt Ensemble opens up new avenues within contemporary music beyond the common styles of New Music or so-called World Music.

In the age of 16 he started with autodidactic guitar playing and first attempts to invent music. In 1984 he went to Berlin, where he found his first teacher and supporter, Carlo Domeniconi. From 1989-1995 he completed his studies in composition at the Berlin University of Arts (HdK Berlin) with Prof. Jolyon Brettingham-Smith. A further encounter of great significance was his acquaintance with the Korean master drummer Kim Duk-Soo, who introduced Chung to Korean percussion music and thus made a lasting impression upon Chung's rhythmic perception.

In the year 2001 he co-founded the multinational ensemble IIIZ+ and in 2009 he co-founded the AsianArt Ensemble with instruments from China, Japan, Korea and Europe whose artistic direction he has held since then. In October 2011 the 80-minutes long work “Part of Nature” was premiered with great success in the National Theater of Korea in Seoul. In 2013 the work was performed again at the same place. 2012 the AsianArt Ensemble was awarded with the “Germen Record Critics’ Award” for their first CD.

2012-2013 he wrote compositions for ensembles with Asian and European instruments, among them “GRAVITY” for daegeum, sheng, bass koto, and ensemble, commissioned by the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung for the festival SOUNDSCAPE EASTASIA. 2014 his epic music theatre “KASSANDRA” was premiered by the Gayageum Ensemble SAGYE & guests in the National Gugak Center in Seoul. 2016 he was composer in residence of the National Orchestra of Korea. 2017 he directed the international festival for transcultural music “Turbulenzen”. 2023 he was commissioned by Wu Wei for a Concerto for Sheng and Chinese Orchestra, premiered by the Kaoshiung Chines Orchestra. 2024 he is the composer in residence of the project “Music of Tomorrow” in Seoul. The marimba master performer Kuniko Kato is dedicating two portrait concerts in Tokyo and Yokohama with the entire works for marimba.

Gamin is a distinguished soloist who tours the world, performing traditional Korean music and cross-disciplinary collaborations. gamin plays 3 traditional winds and is a designated Yisuja, official holder of Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 46 for Court and Royal Military music. Re-inventing new sonorities from ancient, somewhat restrictive, musical systems, gamin has received several cultural exchange program grants, including Artist-in-Residence (2014) at the Asian Cultural Council, and Ministry of Culture, Republic of Korea (2012). Gamin has collaborated in cross-cultural improvisation with world-acclaimed musicians presenting premieres at Roulette Theater, New School, and Metropolitan Museum. gamin was a featured artist at the Silkroad concert, in Seoul, in 2018, performing on-stage with Yo-Yo Ma. Gamin's scheduled Carnegie Hall début for 2019, as featured soloist, with the Nangye Gugak Orchestra, was postponed due to covid.

Since 2018, gamin has curated performances at the Center for Remembering and Sharing. For 2020, gamin was selected as artist-in-residence at the HERE Arts Center, NYC, and released her 4th album, “Nong.” In January 2021, the Jerome Foundation awarded gamin their prestigious 2-year Fellowship and Howard Foundation awarded fellowship in 2023. gamin teaches graduate and undergraduate ethnomusicology as Adjunct Faculty at the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA since 2022.

Ka-Shu (Kenneth) Tam derives his musical inspiration from the sounds of daily life. He attempts to contemplate the cultural relationship between human and their living spaces through his music. His music is known for its fluid linearity and encompasses a broad range of genres, including traditional music and multimedia works.

Tam's compositions have garnered recognition and acclaim worldwide, having been performed and broadcasted in more than fifteen countries and places. His works have been showcased in international events such as the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers and the International Computer Music Conference. Tam has collaborated with numerous renowned artists and ensembles, including the legendary Arditti Quartet (UK).

In 2022, Tam was honored with the prestigious Rieman and Baketel Fellows for Music by the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in Music Composition from the University at Buffalo, and holds a Bachelor's degree from Hong Kong Baptist University and a Master's degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. His composition teachers include David Felder, Cort Lippe, James Mobberley, Zhou Long, Chen Yi, and Christopher Keyes.

Award-winning Japanese composer Koji Nakano’s compositions reflect the relationship between beauty, form, and imperfection through the formality of music. Dr. Nakano is recognized as one of the major voices among Asian composers of his generation. In 2008, he became the first composer to receive the S&R Washington Award Grand Prize. His portrait concert has been presented at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and at Tenri Cultural Institute of New York, among other venues.

Dr. Nakano was a guest professor at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, and Seoul National University. In 2016, he was named the Scripps Erma Taylor O’Brien Distinguished Visiting Professor at Scripps College in the U.S. From 2012 to 2021, he was the Head of International Affairs for the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts at Burapha University in Thailand, where he taught composition as a full-time faculty member. At Burapha, he also directed the Experimental Thai Music Laboratory for Young Composers and was Director of International Programs for Burapha’s Music and Performing Arts Festival.

Dr. Nakano obtained his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in composition from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. From 2002 to 2003, he studied with Dutch composer Louis Andriessen in Amsterdam and at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague as the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program Artist. In 2006, he received his Ph.D. in composition from the University of California at San Diego. He is a member of ASCAP.

Pui-shan Cheung is an internationally award-winning composer, professor, and producer.
She holds the distinction of being the first Hong Kong composer to be appointed as a full-time professor at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Her multimedia vocal suite, “A Thousand Colours” has recently received the National Arts Fund 2024. Her exceptional teaching abilities recognized her with an "Outstanding Teaching Award" in the First Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Music Technology Design Competition in 2023. Her recent commissions include the “Lotus Script” (75 minutes) for cross-media chamber opera, the “Legend of Moon Goddess” (90 minutes), digital opera and traditional Chinese puppets, “A Thousand Colours” (30 minutes) song cycle and immersive art. She is currently an associate professor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and director of the Asian Young Musicians’ Connection (Hong Kong Branch), and the Hong Kong CrossRoads Ensemble. She enjoys researching traditional Asian music, Chinese aesthetics & philosophy, as well as empowering female artists through collaboration.
