Beyond the Wooden Heart: Plant-based Materials in East Asian Classical Sculptures

In this special presentation, Dr Zhu Ruolin examines the history of East Asian classical sculptures from the perspective of technique and material. The study focuses on the organic materials sourced from plants, chiefly wood, hemp fibre, and resin, in reference to the technique of applying and mixing such materials in achieving enduring structure and meticulous finishing. Contextualising with carves and statues made in stone and metal, Dr Zhu will restore their historical context in order to understand the hierarchy, value, and aesthetics of materials in sculpture-making as a result of socio-technical dynamics.

The lecture takes primary examples of twelve-to-thirteen-century wooden buddhist sculptures, originally from Northern China, dispersed among museums and heritage sites in China, and in Western collections, as well as Southern Chinese sculptures survived in Japan. Dr Zhu will explain the significance of studying the material, technique and geo-cultural features of classical sculptures from this unique historical period, its urgency and social impact.

The lecture will be made in Mandarin Chinese, moderated by Li Qi.
