The 20th Party Congress of the Chinese Communist Party convenes every five years to decide matters that will influence China's, and the world's, future for years to come. The event will commence on October 16 in Beijing and is expected to conclude a week later.

 

Join us for a lunch dialogue on October 25 to hear from Mr. David Lie, President's Circle Member of Asia Society Hong Kong Center and Member of the CPPCC National Committee, and Dr. Yan Xiaojun, Associate Professor of Politics and Public Administration, University of Hong Kong. Mr. Ronnie C. Chan, Chairman of Asia Society Hong Kong Center, will moderate this off-the-record dialogue.

Speakers

Dr. Yan Xiaojun is currently an associate professor in politics and public administration and Director of the Research Hub on Institutions of China at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He obtained his Bachelor and Master of Law degrees from Peking University and an A.M. and Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University. He is a comparative political scientist with special expertise in the politics of China. Dr. Yan is the author of three books and co-editor of one edited volume. His articles have appeared in a dozen of leading international academic journals. Dr. Yan is recipient of the 2012 Gordon White Prize by The China Quarterly for his research on new entrepreneurial Party secretaries in rural China. His first book on Hong Kong politics is selected as one of the "Ten Best Chinese Books (non-fiction) Published in 2015" by Asia Weekly. He is recipient of HKU's Outstanding Teaching Award (2013). Dr. Yan is a member of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies.

David T.C. LIESBS, OM, JP comes from a prominent Chinese family and is the eldest grandson of ZHANG Xue Ming, mayor of Tianjin in the 1930s. ZHANG Xue Ming was the brother of the famous young Marshall ZHANG Xue Liang (CHANG Hsueh Liang), a distinguished figure in modern Chinese history. On his grandmother's side, his great-grandfather ZHU Qi Qian, served as the Minister of Transportation, Minister of the Interior, and Acting Prime Minister in the Northern Warlord Government during 1912-1916. 

 

Mr. LIE graduated from the Chelsea School of Art, England (presently known as University of The Arts, London) in 1979 and went on to complete the Leadership program at Harvard Business School. He founded his trading company in 1979, which became Newpower Group in 1982, and founded China Concept Consulting Ltd in 1991. He also serves as an independent non-executive director of Herald Holdings Ltd. (SEHK: 00114) and Harbour Centre Development Limited (SEHK: 00051).

 

Mr. LIE is a Member of the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and currently serve as Chairperson of the Hong Kong –Taiwan Economic and Cultural Cooperation and Promotion Council, Honorary Consul of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Hong Kong.

Moderator

Ronnie C. Chan is the Chair of Hang Lung Group Limited and its subsidiary Hang Lung Properties Limited, both publicly listed in Hong Kong. The Group expanded into mainland China in 1992, developing, owning and managing world-class commercial complexes in key tier one and tier two cities. He founded and chairs the China Heritage Fund, is a co-founding Director of The Forbidden City Cultural Heritage Conservation Foundation in Beijing, and is former Vice President and former Advisor of the China Development Research Foundation in Beijing. Mr. Chan is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Chair Emeritus of the Asia Society and Chairman of its Hong Kong Center, and Co-Founder and Chairman of the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society. He serves or has served on the governing or advisory bodies of several think tanks and universities, which include: Peterson Institute for International Economics, World Economic Forum, East-West Center, Pacific Council on International Policy, Eisenhower Fellowships, The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation, University of Southern California, Indian School of Business, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Yale University, Tsinghua University, and Fudan University.
