Cross-strait tensions have escalated in recent years, leading people all over the world to ask whether such escalation will end with an invasion of Taiwan and war between China and United States. Join Asia Society Hong Kong Center (ASHK) for a discussion on one of the most critical geopolitical issues of our time withJean-Pierre Cabestan, Professor Emeritus of Hong Kong Baptist University and Professor Ying Chan, ASHK Scholar-in-Residence and founding director of The University of Hong Kong's Journalism and Media Studies Centre, as they consider the ideas and questions presented in Professor Cabestan's latest book, Facing China: The Prospect for War and Peace.
About Facing China: The Prospect for War and Peace:
China's geopolitical role in Asia changes with each day, particularly regards to its intentions with Taiwan. However, many analyses and predictions on China's future do not go beyond the familiar "Thucydides Trap". In Facing China, Jean-Pierre Cabestan takes a greater look at the conflict between China and the United States, examining it alongside not only Taiwan, but other points of conflict such as the South China Sea, the Senkaku Islands, and the Sino-Indian border. Russia's war on Ukraine and what it means for a a war over Taiwan is also examined. Cabestan explores and weighs the different ways in which China and the United States might approach a war with each other.
